Heysen Trail Works 2010

In 2010 i was asked to come up with a group of work that represented the Heysen Trail. I have spent a lot of time camping all throughout South Australia and Australia, so it seemed fit i started working on an exhibition that tried to captivate the spirit of what the diversity of the heysen trail meant. I am a massive lover of the Flinders Rangers and i think it has made an impact on my work from the first time i went there as a younger adult. i still frequent the Flinders Rangers and find the immensity of the place totally awe inspiring. when starting the exhibition i had a clear idea was to travel to these locations along the Heysen Trail and camp out along the trail.

So my partner and i set out to document my journey practically the whole way through South Australia, i decided to start at the Flinders Rangers first, so i traveled to where the trail starts which is at parachilna, we traveled throughout the state for the next two weeks just traveling down the heysen trail. some days we would drive to the next destination on the itinerary, others would be walking stretches of the track and other times would be just spent setting up my painting gear and easel to paint from outside. I tended to spend a lot of time painting smaller canvases and sketching out ideas in journal, but i found i every once in a while i would pull out a larger canvas and attempt it to completion outside. it can be quite annoying having to deal with the elements when you are painting

I wanted to attempt some of the paintings in this series with a lot more of a open technique, i had found that a lot of my other Abstract landscape work tended to be sometime more formula than creativity, so this exhibition i wanted to focus on the feeling or the emotion of the sublime. Some of these paintings worked out totally different to how i had planned them to, and i think that was the best part of doing the work for this show.

i thought it would be nice to show a group of photos of the travelings through making this exhibition.
