Nik found himself producing large artwork based in a rural and remote country location based in South Australia called Balaklava. The particular type of arid landscape found its way onto Demasi’s large scale canvases. The bold , brash use of materials thrown around as it was weathered along the way. The apparent overflow of similar images from when he was a child living in Broken Hill were starting to formally take shape. The saturation of oranges and this continual almost habitual use of the arid scape viewpoint. He found that he was starting to think of his works as whole bodies of artwork.
“i find producing whole bodies of work a great way to re count your childhood experiences as well as look at new experiences . i don’t know why but i have always been drawn towards making full bodies of work, instead of making singular pieces of work. there is this challenge in seeing what would happens when you start ‘conceptually’ twenty pieces of work. When you create a whole body of work your work is more at one, each piece has that relationship with the other”.
The overflow of work in this time was furious and is shown by the amount of gallery representations he had in these years. He found himself involved in a quite rich and dynamic art community that were scattered within the northern arid inter land area. he found some form of inspiration from living in this sparse area.
“As a painter you cant help paint your surroundings and this was the surroundings i had been given by circumstances. Its all about circumstances”.
In 2009 Nikolas traveled to Sydney in an effort to gain more national attention for his artwork. At around the point he decided to do this he produced a hard bound booklet .. the connection went on for the next 2 years.
“i will remember it forever it was the first time i had been on an Airplane and the first time i had been to Sydney.
“Sydney is such a vibrant city, so much packed into one place, as an artist i found my travels to Sydney rewarding on so many levels, the gallery culture is like no where else, the colour of the just everyday things is what plays with your senses.the city itself is continually alive, abuzz, with action. it is how i feel when i am in that zone ……it is all abuzz around me.”
“i spent several occasions wandering around for hours at the national gallery of Sydney i also went and spent a fair bit of time in Brett Whiteley’s studio. i think i had one if those high spiritual experiences in his studio, as i bent over to look at the floor and noticed a paint tin mark on the floor.as that point i had realised where i was and literally it mentally moved me”
